Functions of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN)
include being the lender of last resort and
manager of the macroeconomy. These
functions have been the major driver of the
policies and pronouncements of the apex bank.
The tenure of the current governor of the CBN
Malam Sanusi Lamido Sanusi kicked off with
the reformation of the Nigerian banking
system. Thus began the era of "Sanusitisation".
The 2009 banking sector reform which
eventually saw the sack of six bank chief
executives as well as their boards and the
nationalization of three of the banks had been
seen then as a witch hunting exercise by some
and the apex bank undeservedly bashed by
many.
